World-Class Instructional Design & Assessment

WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design & Assessment) is a consortium of 38 states (as of 2016) and the District of Columbia created to advance academic language development and academic achievement for linguistically diverse students through high quality standards, assessments, research, and professional development for educators. Wyoming is a consortium member and has adopted WIDA’s English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards and assessments. Montana, Colorado, the Dakotas, Idaho, and Utah are also consortium members.

The five WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards address not only social and instructional language development but also the subject specific languages of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. WIDA has also developed CAN DO Descriptors to help teachers and para-educators who work with ELL students to plan differentiated instruction and lessons, and to informally gauge student progress.

For formal assessment of ELL students, the WIDA-ACCESS Placement Test (W-APT) is an English language proficiency screening tool for incoming students, used to identify and provide services for students who need support, while the Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners (ACCESS for ELLs) is given annually to monitor students’ progress in acquiring English.
